Chief Minister Mayawati has repeatedly told the police not to ignore the complaints of citizens. But right here in Lucknow, the police have refused to register an FIR in a case two weeks ago,in which a police van knocked down two senior citizens, leaving one crippled and another fighting for life. And since there is no FIR,there was no investigation. The left leg of one of the victims, meanwhile, had to be amputated. The cash relief of Rs 50,000 each that the district administration gave them has long been spent. On July 8,Dr Dharam Singh (60) and Krishna Kumar Awasthi (70) were going on a motorcycle when a troops carrier hit them near the Krishna Nagar police station. The vehicle was being used to carry policemen for deployment along a route through which the Chief Minister was expected to pass. Both were rushed to a hospital from where they were referred to the Trauma Centre. Making an entry in the general diary, the police released the driver and the vehicle. According to police,in his statement,Lala Ram,driver of the troop carrier, said it was an accident. The motorcyclist was speeding and he had tried his best to save them. The district administration paid them compensation and the matter was dropped. Since then, the families of the victims have made several rounds of the police station to register a case against the driver of the carrier, but to no effect. In fact, every time they go,they say they have to face humiliation. My sister visited the police station thrice to lodge an FIR against the driver, said Dr Dharam Singhs son Alok Singh. Every time, the policemen found fault with her application and asked her to come back with a fresh one. Once she was told that a case will be lodged only after police station in charge arrived. She waited for him for an hour in vain and finally came back. Dharam Singh,an ex-armyman,suffered multiple fractures and his left leg had to be amputated. He is now undergoing treatment at the Command Hospital in Cantt. Krishna Kumar Awasthi,a social worker, suffered multiple fractures in the ribs and is now admitted to a private hospital at Lucknow-Rae Bareilly Road. Awasthis wife Sarla said: The administration forgot us after paying Rs 50,000. We were treated badly at the government hospital. She said they have already spent over Rs 1 lakh for his treatment. Alok Singh said they, too, had spent Rs 1 lakh on the treatment of his father. Inspector K P Singh,in charge of the Krishna Nagar police station, said the victims family members had come to lodge a case, but their application was incomplete. We will lodge a case if they came with a fresh application. Alambagh Circle Officer Subhash Attri said he did not know about the status of the case. Probably, the family members of the victim did not come to register a case. I will check and lodge a case if it has not been registered, he said.
