The state government has withdrawn the “Y-category” security of senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, stating it was no more required.

The government has sent a letter with the directive to Rampur police, which has been providing security to the SP leader.

Rampur Additional Superintendent of Police Sansar Singh said, “Wednesday, we received the letter from the Superintendent of Police (Training and Security), following which Azam Khan’s security was withdrawn.”

The decision to withdraw Azam’s security was taken at a state-level security meeting in November last, but the order came Wednesday, an official said Thursday.

Since the BJP came to power in Uttar Pradesh in 2017, as many as 81 cases have been registered against Azam Khan in Rampur on various charges, including land-grabbing, cheating, and criminal trespass. In some of these cases, Khan’s wife and son were also booked along with him. They are currently out on bail.

In October last, Azam, who represented Rampur Sadar in the Assembly, faced disqualification after a court sentenced him to three years in jail in a hate speech case. In May, a Rampur court acquitted Azam in the 2019 hate speech case.
