Following several incidents of hooliganism at the Gorakhpur University campus organised by a group of people led by national secretary of ruling Samajwadi Partys (SP) students wing, the Vice-Chancellor,Professor Pravin Chandra Trivedi, has written to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to take action against his partyman.
The V-C wrote to CM after the occurrence of an incident on the university campus on Thursday when a group of youths led by Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha national secretary Hareshyam Singh, who was demanding the declaration of dates for holding student union elections had a scuffle with the V-C. Singh insisted on meeting Trivedi over the issue, but when the students were stopped by security personnel, they got agitated and tried to damage the vehicle of the V-C by hurling stones.
In his letter sent on Friday,Trivedi apprised the chief minister of incidents of hooliganism taking place on the university campus, which are being led by outsiders. Trivedi said he has asked the CM to take action against Singh,as he is from his party (SP). Singh who was the general secretary of Gorakhpur University Students Union,is at present the national secretary of Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha.
University Chief Proctor O P Pandey said Singh, who is not a student of the university, often creates ruckus at the university and there have been several recent incidents of hooliganism in which he was involved. On Thursday he forcibly entered the convocation function of the university, which was being presided over by the V-C and misbehaved with him. Singhs supporters also tried to damage the V-Cs vehicle when he was leaving the university,Pandey said.
When contacted,Singh said he had gone to meet the V-C along with some students to ask him to declare the dates of students union elections. But when we were not allowed to meet him, some of the students got agitated and grabbed the V-C. However,I intervened and made him leave the place safely, he said.
Singh said he did not misbehave with the V-C and had not been involved in any hooliganism incident on campus. However,he added that the V-C was a Congress party member and so he was delaying the students union elections as his party does not want the polls to be held.
Trivedi, meanwhile, said the university administration had started the preparations for holding the elections and the dates will be announced once the admission process gets completed. We cannot announce the dates of election at a time when the admission process of some courses is still going on. If I do something like that anyone can move to the court and this will adversely affect the students unions. I also want to get the student union elections conducted, Trivedi told The Sunday Express over phone.
Trivedi said he will soon lodge a complaint against Singh. He said Singh was also a railway employee and he had already written to his organisation seeking action against him. No university student indulges in violence on campus. Only outsiders are creating problems. I will not tolerate this even if I have to leave the university, said Trivedi.
