A first-year engineering student died after she jumped from the fourth floor of her institute in Lucknow on Tuesday afternoon.
Poonam Mishra (20) was rushed to the hospital where doctors declared her dead on arrival. A native of Janpur district,she was pursuing BTech from the Azad Institute of Engineering & Technology.
The police and institute authorities denied the incident as the fallout of ragging. Poonams classmates and her two roommates told us she was unhappy over her lack of writing and communication skills in English. She was depressed for quite a few days, Sarojini Nagar Circle Officer Subhash Attri said.
Poonam had joined the institute on September 7 and was allotted room number 107 at the Azad Girls Hostel.
Institute Director Dr Mohammad Hussain said,We have informed Poonams parents in Jaunpur. This is the first time that a student from this institute has taken such an extreme step.
Dharam Raj Mishra,Poonams father,said: Two days ago,I spoke to my daughter on phone. Poonam was not good in English but we cannot believe she can take such a step. Mishra works as a government employee in Azamgarh.
