Cutting across party lines,members of the state Assembly on Wednesday expressed serious concerns over rising number of suicide cases among students and stressed the need for a solution to the menace.
The issue was raised during Zero Hour through an adjournment notice by Pramod Tewari,leader of the Congress Legislature Party.
Putting the blame on TV serials and Bollywood films for the rising trend of suicide among students and youngsters in the state,the Congress leader said to some extent flaws in the education system,high handedness of teachers and changes in the family structure and culture were also responsible for the growing trend.
The situation is serious in the state. In last 20 days,as many 23 suicide cases have been reported in the state, Tewari said,adding,In some cases due to poor law and order young girls are driven to commit suicide as in the case of Kanpurs Neelam Shukla.
Sharing the concern of the members,Speaker Sukhdeo Rajbhar said the issue was of grave concern and warranted immediate attention as it is our collective responsibility. He announced that an all-party meet would be convened soon to discuss the issue and work out a solution.
BJP leader Hukum Singh blamed TV news channels for glorification of such incidents. He said TV channels should not be allowed to highlight suicide cases.
A small incident of punishment to a school children by teachers is exaggerated by TV news channels. Suicide cases should not be allowed to be glorified by the electronic media, he said.
Urging the chair for an urgent all party meeting,he said representatives from the print and electronic media,social scientists and psychologists should also be invited in the meeting.
State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Lalji Verma also expressed his concern on the issue and assured that the government would take steps to prevent such incidents.

he BJP legislators staged a walkout from the state Assembly over the rising cost of food grains and essential commodities. BJP leader Satish Mahana alleged that there was no let up in inflation in retail market despite the slump in the prices of food grains and other commodities in the wholesale market. Radha Mohan Das Agarwal of the BJP blamed smuggling of sugar and rice to Nepal from bordering areas of eastern UP behind the price rise.
But state Food and Supply Minister Ram Prasad Choudhury claimed that the prices of food grains have decreased in the past ten days following the steps taken by the state government.
To stop floods in east UP,embankments to be raised on Nepal rivers
Embankments will soon be constructed on some rivers originating from Nepal for a permanent solution to recurring floods in eastern Uttar Pradesh,the state Assembly was informed on Wednesday. Irrigation and Flood Control Minister,Naseemuddin Siddiqui,said officials of the Central Water Commission,the state government and Nepal have agreed to carry out the work soon.He said a permanent solution to the problem was possible only by building embankments on the Rapti,Ghaghra,Sharda and other rivers,which cause widespread devastation every year.
