The CBI today arrested a retired inspector of the UP Food and Supply Department for his alleged involvement in the 2004-05 foodgrain scam in Lakhimpur Kheri district.
The inspector – Jokhe Lal – was posted in Palia area of the district during 2004-05.
CBI sources said that Lals name had come to light during interrogation of then in-charge of Palia State Food Corporation godown Jagdish Prasad Verma,who was in CBI custody last week. Verma was among the nine accused arrested by the CBI on May 1.
The sources said that Verma had told the CBI that supply inspector Jokhe Lal used to take his share of the cut money given by transporters and businessmen involved in diversion of foodgrain meant for the BPL scheme.
Lal was supposed to ensure proper distribution of the foodgrain from the fair price shops in his area. However,the foodgrain never reached the shops and were diverted out of the district,the sources added.
Lal retired in December last year.
