DMRC proposes new changes in Lucknow Metro corridors

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has proposed major changes in the alignment of East-West and North-South corridors in the Lucknow Metro project.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has proposed major changes in the alignment of East-West and North-South corridors in the Lucknow Metro project.

The East-West corridor is now proposed to start from Charbagh and end in Basant Kunj on Hardoi Road via Gautam Buddha Marg-Aminabad-Medical University-Chowk and Thakurganj. This proposed route will cover a distance of 13-km.

Earlier, this corridor was proposed to start from Rajajipuram and end at Hahnneman crossing in Gomti Nagar via Hazratganj-Ambedkar Memorial and Patrakarpuram. This route would have been convenient for the residents of Gomti Nagar Extension. The length of this corridor was 14-km. According to sources, this change was brought about as the traffic density from Rajajipuram to Hahnneman crossing was estimated to be less in future as compared to Hardoi Road.

Following this change, the Metro will not run in Gomti Nagar via Hazratganj as well as Mavaiyya and Rajajipuram.

According to the new proposed alignment, the commuters will now have to use the route of North-South corridor to reach Gomti Nagar.

Earlier, this corridor was planned to start from Amausi airport and reach Munshipulia via Hussainganj-Hazratgaj-Parivartan Chowk-Lucknow University-IT Crossing-Nishatganj and Polytechnic crossing. The length of this proposed route was 27-km.

Now,the DMRC has proposed to develop a tri-section at the Polytechnic crossing. One section will end at Munshipulia. Another section will be turned towards Gomti Nagar to end at Mithaiwalla Crossing in Vivek Khand.

Mukesh Kumar Meshram,Vice-Chairman of LDA,refused to divulge much information. “Metro route has been extended to Basant Kunj on Hardoi road as housing is possible only in that area. Other areas have already saturated,” Meshram said.

According to sources,DMRC has proposed to keep the entire North-South corridor elevated. In the East-West Corridor, half of the route from Charbagh to Aminabad is proposed to be underground and the rest of the stretch is proposed to be elevated.

Development of the underground stretch will cost Rs 400 crore per kilometre. The cost of the elevated stretch will be about Rs 250 crore per kilometer, said sources.
