An Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) bus conductor who lost his job over allegedly halting a Delhi-bound bus to allow two Muslim passengers to offer namaz in Bareilly nearly three months back was found dead on the railway tracks near his native village in Mainpuri district in the wee hours of Monday.

The body of Mohit Yadav (32), was found in a mutilated condition, it is learnt.

While no suicide note was found, Mohit’s family claimed that he ended his life by jumping before a running train since he was under stress mentally and financially after failing to get his termination revoked.

The action against Mohit and bus driver KP Singh was taken two days after the June 3 incident when a video of the episode went viral. Singh, a regular UPSRTC employee, was put under suspension. Mohit, a contractual employee, was working with the UPSRTC for nearly 10 years.

“Mohit felt that he was removed from the job for no reason. The bus was halted after some passengers requested to allow them to go to the bathroom. In the meantime, two passengers started offering namaz. The authorities took action on the basis of a video of the incident. They did not seek an explanation either from Mohit or the driver. Mohit was depressed because he could not get reinstated,” said Mohit Yadav’s cousin Tinku Yadav, who runs a travel agency in Mainpuri.

Mohit’s wife Rinki said, “My husband was running the household with his salary. He was having responsibilities on his shoulders being the eldest member of the family. Due to job loss, he went into depression and committed suicide.”

KP Singh, the driver, also seconded Tinku Yadav’s version of the event. He said that when their bus reached neighbouring Rampur district on June 3, some passengers requested to stop the bus to go to the bathroom. When the bus stopped, two passengers started offering namaz on the roadside. The bus was halted for around three minutes at the place, he added.

and purchase some goods from the market. A resident of Nagla Kushali village, he is survived by his  wife, a four-year-old son, and three brothers.

On Monday morning, Mohit’s family got information that his body lying near the railway tracks. They rushed to the spot and sent the body for autopsy. The police identified him through his belongings, including his identity card. The track where the body was found is around a kilometre from the family’s residence.

Government Railway Police (GRP) Mainpuri Station House Officer Arvind Kumar said they got information about the body from a gangman when he was inspecting the railway track. “When the police arrived, the victim’s phone was ringing. We picked up the call and came to know about his identity. In the meantime, locals also arrived and identified the body. The family has given in writing that he came in contact with a train while crossing the track. An inquiry into will be conducted in the matter.”

Mohit’s neighbour Santosh Yadav said that Mohit was helping his family in farming recently. “He used to talk about returning to his job. He believed the action of terminating his service was taken in haste,” Santosh added.

UPSRTC Assistant Regional Manager (Bareilly) Sanjeev Srivastava said action against Mohit and KP Singh was taken after an inquiry was conducted. “Mohit had submitted an application to give him another chance. The application was to be put before a committee,” he added.
