Cow carcass, skinning of dead calf: Police clamp down on further outbreak of violence

According to police, the incident happened in Khera Todi village in Badalpur.

In two separate incidents in Gautam Budh Nagar district, police managed to keep sectarian tensions under control after a cow’s carcass was found in one village, while a man tried to incite violence over the skinning of a dead calf in another village.

The first incident happened in Chithera village, barely five kms from Bisara village where 50-year-old Mohammad Akhlaq was beaten to death and his son severely injured last week.

Residents made a PCR call to inform police that the remains of an animal had been found on the outskirts of the village. Police said that when they reached the spot, a few boys were also present.

“Upon medical examination, the carcass was identified to be that of a cow. However, the animal had been dead for over 36-48 hours. We deployed security in the area as a precautionary measure. But the situation is under control and there is no tension in the village,” said Kiran S, Senior Superintendent of Police, Gautam Budh Nagar.

Police said an FIR on cow slaughter was registered under the Animal Cruelty Protection Act against unknown persons.

Residents too claimed there was no tension in the village. “We were vigilant because of what happened in Bisara. Police was informed and they reached the village. There was no tension here,” said Virender Singh, the village head.

Meanwhile, 10 kms away from Dadri in Badalpur, a 26-year-old man was arrested Monday morning after he attempted to incite violence by over the skinning of a dead calf.

According to police, the incident happened in Khera Todi village in Badalpur. A person from the nearby Deri Machha village was skinning a dead calf near a factory in the area.

“A sick calf had died and the owner asked a person from his village to dispose off the calf. The man travelled two kms to Khera Todi and was trying to skin the carcass,” said a senior police officer.

Guatam Budd Nagar SP (Rural) Sanjay Kumar Yadav said one Deepak Sharma was passing by Khera Todi and noticed the man skinning the carcass.

“Without even confirming the incident, he called police and said a cow is being slaughtered. He tried to incite violence and fear by creating a ruckus and gathering a large crowd. After police reached the spot, it was found that the person he had accused was a Hindu and was only attempting to skin the calf as it was already dead,” said Yadav.

Residents who gathered at the spot said Sharma also made a video and had circulated it amongst his friends. Police, however, denied that any video was made.
