More than 36 hours since Dr B P Singh,Chief Medical Officer of Family Welfare, was shot dead near his Gomti Nagar residence while on a morning walk on Saturday, the Special Task Force is still looking for clues to crack the case.

The state government, meanwhile, announced a cash reward of Rs 2 lakh to anyone who could provide any information to the probe team that could help in solving the case.

The STF is also examining all the financial matters of his department that were being handled by Dr Singh in order to find whether the crime had any links with the tenders and contractors’ payments.

The probe team has also collected the mobile numbers that were active in the area between 4 am to 8 am. Details of the calls made or received by these numbers would be collected and studied,a police officer said.

Sources said that Dr Singh used to deal with funds that were received and utilised by health services under the National Rural Health Mission. He had taken charge as CMO (Family Welfare) on February 26 and had told his family members about some irregularities in his department, said sources.

“We are investigating all the matters relating to the payments that were cleared by Dr Singh in the last few days and particularly on March 31,the closing day of the financial year. We are also looking into the contracts in which payments were due for a long time and funds were not released even on March 31,” said an STF official.

The doctor’s family is sticking to its demand of a CBI probe into the murder. “We still stand by our demand for a CBI inquiry and if the government does not accept it,we will seek court’s help,” said Indra Pratap Singh, the slain doctor’s cousin.

The CMO’s elder brother,Ishwar Prasad Singh, who had written a letter to the chief secretary on Saturday, seeking a time-bound probe, said that he also wanted a CBI inquiry. There is no contradiction between the letter I submitted to the chief secretary and demand for a CBI inquiry,he added.

Dr Singh was the second CMO of Family Welfare who was shot dead within six months. His predecessor,Dr V K Arya, had met the same fate in an identical fashion in October 2010.
