Vishal Sharma, 30, who was waiting near the jail along with an accomplice – allegedly to kill an undertrial who was being released on bail – died in the shooting outside the jail premises, the police said, adding that his aide was arrested. A probe has been launched into the matter.

“The injured officer, Ranjeet Singh, lodged an FIR on Saturday evening against the arrested criminal under IPC section 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide),” said Inspector Jeet Singh, in-charge of Kotwali police station, Bijnor.

According to Bijnor Superintendent of Police Neeraj Jadaun, Vishal and his aide Raunak Singh, 32, allegedly held a grudge towards Rajan Kumar, 35, who was scheduled to be released from prison around 8.30 pm on Friday. “Intent on settling scores, Vishal opened fire at Rajan shortly after his release, but the bullet missed him. Rajan rushed back towards the prison’s main gate,” said the SP.

During the subsequent exchange of gunfire between the police, jail security personnel and the assailants, Sub-Inspector Ranjeet was shot and injured, he said. “Simultaneously, a bullet struck Vishal in the chest. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead. Raunak was arrested at the scene. The SI was also admitted to a hospital,” SP Jadaun said.

According to the police, Rajan was arrested on June 13 for allegedly firing at a school guard. He was granted interim bail on Friday. Officers said Rajan, Vishal and Raunak were previously associated with an organised gang in Uttarakhand, but Rajan later parted ways after a row with Vishal.

“In May, Rajan stormed into Vishal’s house and fired bullets in the air to frighten his family members. Since then, Vishal was awaiting his release from jail to settle scores,” the SP said.
