Congress defers Jal Yatra

The Congress has deferred its Jal Yatra, which was to begin in Kanpur on Friday, because of non-availability of senior leaders and adequately equipped steamers.

The Congress has deferred its Jal Yatra, which was to begin in Kanpur on Friday, because of non-availability of senior leaders and adequately equipped steamers.

The yatra was planned to reach out to Nishad,Kevat,Mallah and other communities living along rivers in the state.

“The date was officially declared after consultation with senior leaders. However, the steamers are yet to be prepared. We are planning to cover these steamers so that they work in all kinds of weather. After the Ganga,we plan to take up other rivers like Gomti,Yamuna,Ghagra, etc.” said Umaid Singh Nishad, coordinator of the yatra.

When reminded that the date was decided about a month ago,Umaid said,“Majority of the senior leaders are busy with elections in other states,so they expressed their inability to come here. Since we want these yatras to have a greater impact,we have decided to postpone them.”

Sources added that some partymen had complained that the timing was wrong as the water level was low at many places. The yatra was to cover Fatehpur,Pratapgarh,Kaushambi,Allahabad and some other districts by April 27.

UPCC spokesperson Subodh Srivastava said,“There is no problem as such with the planning of the yatra. It is just that some of the leaders are busy with elections elsewhere, thus we decided to postpone it. Fresh dates will be announced soon and we will launch it in a big way.”
