Citing NCRB data, govt says UP tops list in convictions in crimes against women cases

Citing the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the UP government on Tuesday said the state has emerged as “number one” in the country in terms of convictions in crimes against women with a conviction rate of 180 per cent as compared to the national average.

“The latest NCRB data for the year 2022 has also revealed that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s zero-tolerance policy against crime and criminals in the state, has led to a significant drop in the overall crime rate in the state,” said a government spokesperson.

The spokesperson said that according to the NCRB data, 4,01,787 cases were registered in UP as compared to over 35 lakh cases registered in the country.

“Besides, the crime rate of UP is 171.6 percent as compared to 258.1 percent of the entire country,” the official said.

“In terms of the ratio of cases registered, UP stands at 11.28 percent and ranks 20th in the country compared to other states and Union Territories. This is when Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state in the entire country, constituting 16.89 per cent of the population,” he added.

In a statement on Tuesday, Special Director General, UP Police, Prashant Kumar said that the results of the inter-department efforts in the state are showing in the NCRB data. “If we see all the IPC crimes, then 11.28 per cent of crimes in India have happened in UP. In the rankings of states, we are ranked 20… If we talk of the crime rate, then 19 states have fared worse than UP. In terms of serious crimes like murder, we are ranked 28. In attempt to murder cases, we are ranked 25. In eve-teasing cases, we are ranked 17. In cases of kidnapping for ransom, UP is ranked 30. In cases of rape, we are 24. In robbery cases, we are 27. It shows that the police have done good work and the results are here,” said Kumar.
