A 20-year-old woman died by suicide in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district after she was allegedly thrashed and humiliated by a group of men who found her in a “compromising position” with a man from a village in the district, the police said on Wednesday.
The incident took place on Monday evening and the men allegedly filmed her and threatened to share the video on social media. All seven men, including the youth with whom she was found, were arrested on Tuesday and sent to judicial custody.
“We got a complaint from the father of the victim who alleged that his daughter was raped by the youth found with her. He also alleged that six others who found her beat her and humiliated her. All accused were booked and sent to jail,” the station house officer of the jurisdictional police station said.
While the youth who was with the woman was booked on charges of rape, the others were booked under the abetment to suicide charge. “Since the woman belonged to a Scheduled Caste, the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act has also been invoked,” the police officer said.
The woman, who worked as a domestic help in Delhi, had returned to her village in Unnao after an argument with her sister in Delhi.
“The woman was found in a compromising position with a man from the village by six others on Monday evening when they were returning after cutting wood from the nearby forest. They beat the woman and filmed her. They also threatened to share the video online,” a police officer said.
