By-elections for two MLC seats to take place on May 29: EC

One seat had fell vacant after the resignation of BJP leader Laxman Prasad Acharya after he was appointed the Governor of Sikkim.

The Election Commission on Thursday announced the schedule for bypolls for two seats of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council on May 29.

These are two casual vacancies in the state legislative council by the members of the Legislative Assembly.

One seat had fell vacant after the resignation of BJP leader Laxman Prasad Acharya after he was appointed the Governor of Sikkim.

Acharya’s term was up to January 30, 2027, but he resigned on February 15 this year.

Another seat fell vacant after the death of BJP member Banwari Lal on February 15. His term was to end on July 6, 2028.

The Commission has decided to hold two separate by-elections to fill these two vacancies in Uttar Pradesh.

The notification of by-election will be issued on May 11 and May 18 will be the last date of filing nominations.

The scrutiny of nominations will be done on May 19 and May 22 will be the last date for the withdrawal of nominations.

The polling will take place on May 29 and the counting of votes will take place on the same day.

The Election Commission has directed the UP Chief Secretary to depute a senior officer to ensure that the instructions about the Covid-19 containment measures are complied with while making arrangements for conducting the polls.
