The decomposed body of a 49-year-old fisherman who allegedly died by suicide in a Pakistan jail was brought to his home in the Basirah village in Uttar Pradesh Saturday night. The police said Ghurahu Bind had been lodged in jail after being caught by Pakistani authorities in 2022 for allegedly entering the country’s territorial waters while fishing.
On Friday, officials from the Gujarat government received the body from Pakistani authorities at the Wagh border. It was then brought to Agra, from where the Jaunpur district administrative officials took custody and transported it to the deceased’s home at Basirah village.
“The body was taken to Bind’s house, and later, the final rites were performed,” said Dr Dinesh Chandra, District Magistrate of Jaunpur. The government officials were present when the final rites were being performed.
The DM added that efforts are underway to identify suitable government schemes through which the deceased’s family can be provided assistance. Bind is survived by wife and five children.
According to the deceased’s family, they were informed on the evening of February 8, 2022, that Bind, along with seven others—including two men from their village—had been arrested by Pakistani authorities for allegedly entering the country’s territorial waters. Since the arrest, the family claims they received no communication—no letters or phone calls from him.
Last week, the family reportedly received a letter via WhatsApp from an unknown number on the cellphone of Bind’s wife, Parvati, informing them of his death by suicide in jail. Uncertain about its authenticity, the family did not immediately raise the matter.
The family received confirmation of his death Tuesday when a woman official from the Jaunpur district administration visited their home in Basirah village for address verification.
Following this, the family sent letters to the Central and state governments for assistance in bringing back the body. The family also alleged that Bind was murdered inside the jail.
