A delegation of BJP leaders met Governor B L Joshi and asked him not to give his assent to the controversial state Urban Local Self Government Bill.

“The Bill proposes indirect elections of mayors and chairmen of nagar palika parishads and this would lead to horse-trading and corrupt practices,” BJP leaders later told mediapersons.

The delegation led by party state president Surya Pratap Shahi and MP Lalji Tondon submitted a memorandum to the Governor in this regard.

The controversial Bill was passed in the Assembly on February 21 without any discussion. Tondon alleged that in the panchyat elections held last year BSP men used money and muscle power to won seats.

“The same would be done in local bodies election if the Bill is passed,” he said. The party said the bill takes away right from the urban people to elect their mayor and is being introduced without taking opinion from the opposition parties. BJP has also planned to conduct torch procession in urban areas on Wednesday.
