BJP’s Saharanpur city unit president, Puneet Tyagi, resigned on Wednesday after an actor in a video posted on social media accused him of sexually exploiting her.

Tyagi, however, denied the allegations, saying he was resigning from the post since he did not want the party’s “image to be sullied”. The Mumbai-based actor, who claims to have acted in nearly 250 Gujarati, Bhojpuri and Hindi films, hails from Uttar Pradesh. In the video, she alleged that Tyagi sexually exploited her over a long period, causing a lot of mental harassment.

“The BJP leader developed a rapport with my son… I had been living with my son in Mumbai after ending ties with my husband. The BJP leader’s intimacy with my son and good behaviour with me made me to think that I found support in my life. We have had intimate relations for a few months but later he distanced himself,” the actress claimed.

“I lodged a complaint with the UP Chief Minister, the Prime Minister, and top BJP leaders but no one paid heed,” she further alleged.

In a fresh video released on Thursday, the actor said she was getting life threats from some BJP leaders and MLAs since she went public with her allegations.

Tyagi, who sent his resignation to Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary, the BJP’s state unit chief, said, “The truth will come out soon and I am ready to accept any decision taken by my party leadership. I am innocent,” Tyagi said in his letter.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rohit Singh Sajwan said no police complaint has been lodged in the matter yet. “Had there been a complaint, we would have investigated it properly,” SSP Sajwan said.
