BJP keeps up the heat,to protest for a week

In Kanpur,the party activists burnt effigies of Chief Minister Mayawati and held demonstrations at several places,leading to arrest of 42 BJP workers,including five-time party legislator from Kanpur Cantt Satish Mahana.

Minor clashes took place between the police and BJP workers at Chawla Market and Parade Chauraha. BJP men also held a dharna at Bada Chauraha. The party is opposing the recent changes in law to introduce indirect election of Mayors.

District BJP General Secretary Surendra Maithani said the party will hold protests everyday for the next one week. In morning,BJP workers gathered in a large number at Chawla Market Chauraha. The police tried to seize an effigy of the Chief Minister from their possession,but the BJP men managed to burn it. The party supporters then marched to the Govind Nagar police station and held a demonstration there. They were arrested and sent to jail.

Addressing party workers,Mahana said the lathi-charge on senior BJP leaders at Lucknow was a reflection of the BSP government’s dictatorial attitude. He said direct elections of Mayors have been done away with as the BSP was afraid of facing the people.

Another group of the party supporters gathered at Bada Chauraha and sat on a three-hour silent dharna. Later,they blocked the traffic it the area.

Meanwhile,hundreds of BJP activists blocked traffic on the national highway in Allahabad protesting against lathicharge on party legislators. The BJP members,led by former state minister Narendra Kumar Singh Gaur,gathered at the Shastri bridge across the river Ganga and raised slogans against the BSP government.
