The Allahabad High Court Bar Association (AHCBA) Monday gave a strike call asking lawyers to abstain from work Tuesday in protest against the demand to set up a new bench in western Uttar Pradesh.
In an official communication issued,Joint Secretary (Press) of the AHCBA,Uday Shanker Tiwari, said: A decision to abstain from legal work was taken in a meeting of the Bar Association today. This is in protest against the demand for setting up a HC bench in western Uttar Pradesh.
Tiwari said it would be a one-day strike. The matter will be reviewed August 14 after which a decision will be taken whether to continue with the strike or not.
Lawyers from more than 20 districts in western UP argue that a separate HC bench in the region will ensure easy access to justice for the people from the region.
The matter recently took a political turn when Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh, who hails from western UP,met with Union Law Minister Kapil Sibal and discussed the demand.
