Allahbad HC lawyers to boycott work today

The Allahabad High Court Bar Association (AHCBA) Monday gave a strike call asking lawyers to abstain from work Tuesday in protest against the demand to set up a new bench in western Uttar Pradesh

The Allahabad High Court Bar Association (AHCBA) Monday gave a strike call asking lawyers to abstain from work Tuesday in protest against the demand to set up a new bench in western Uttar Pradesh.

In an official communication issued,Joint Secretary (Press) of the AHCBA,Uday Shanker Tiwari,said: “A decision to abstain from legal work was taken in a meeting of the Bar Association today. This is in protest against the demand for setting up a HC bench in western Uttar Pradesh.’’

Tiwari said it would be a one-day strike. The matter will be reviewed August 14 after which a decision will be taken whether to continue with the strike or not.

Lawyers from more than 20 districts in western UP argue that a separate HC bench in the region will ensure easy access to justice for the people from the region.

The matter recently took a political turn when Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh,who hails from western UP,met with Union Law Minister Kapil Sibal and discussed the demand.
