Top seeds Saina Nehwal and Chetan Anand sailed into the finals with relatively easy semi-final outings but it was Aditi Mutatkar who stole the show with her power-packed performance on the penultimate day in the Syed Modi International Grand Prix tournament here on Saturday.

World number eight Saina trounced sixth seeded Switzerland’s Jeanine Cicognini 21-12 21-10 in just 24 minutes,relying on her dominant net play to take control. Though the players exchanged long rallies,Saina had the clear upper hand from the word go. The second game was even more one-sided with Saina emerging clear winner,outplaying Cicognini in every aspect of the game. “The match progressed as per my expectations. Unlike the quarter-final tie where I faced some good competition from my Indonesian opponent Fransiska Ratnasari,today things were quite easy for me,” said Saina after the match.

The 17th ranked Chetan got past compatriot RMV Gurusaidutt 21-16 21-13 in 35 minutes. Saina faces fourth seed Aditi Mutatkar who upset second seed Maria Febe Kusumasti of Indonesia scripting a 22-20,21-13 victory in her semi-final match. Chetan will play against fifth seed Dyonisius Hayom Rumbaka of Indonesia who brushed aside the challenge of Kwong Beng Chan of Malaysia 21-13,21-16 in the last four stage match of the men’s singles event.

An upset was caused in the men’s doubles section also when the Indonesian pair of Adnan Fauzi and Tri Kusumawardana stunned second seeded pair of Tarun Kona and Arun Vishnu of India 21-17,13-21,21-16 in the semi-finals. Top seeded pair of Akdhay Dewalkar and Jishnu Sanyal of India survived some anxious moments before defeating the fourth seeded duo of Alwin Francis and Shankar Gopan 19-21,21-8,21-18.

In the women’s doubles semis,third seeded pair of Misaki Matsutomo and Akaya Takahashi of Japan and the duo of Nadya Melati and Devi Tika Permatasai of Indonesia emerged winners in their respective matches. The third seeded pair of Shruti Kurian and Tarun Kona and second seeded pair of Aparna Balan and Arun Vishnu won in the mixed doubles semis to set up a title clash.
