An eight-year-old girl reportedly committed suicide in her hostel room in a boarding school run by the Social Welfare Department in Mohammadi police station area of Lakhimpur Kheri district on Wednesday.
The girl was identified as Rolly,a Class 2 student of Rajkiya Ashram Paddhati Residential School. She had enrolled in the school in the current session.
Rolly was daughter of Satyaketu Gautam,a resident of Lakhimpur town. Police said Rolly was ill for some time and wanted to go home. When her father and elder brother Arvind visited her at the hostel on Wednesday morning,she insisted on going with them. But her father declined to take her with them,police said.
Her body,hanging from the ceiling fan inside her room,was discovered by the cleaning staff of the hostel around 1 pm today.
Mohammadi Sub-divisional Magistrate Ashraf Sultan Siddiqui said Rolly had had fever for two days and was not attending classes. She had asked her father to come and visit her. Siddiqui said Rolly had insisting on going to Lakhimpur and had even packed her clothes,but her father refused to take her along.
A few minutes after her father left,the girl hanged herself with a bedsheet after tying it to the ceiling fan and climbing on a table,he said. The body was discovered by sanitation workers who went to clean the room in the afternoon. Siddiqui said the girl was alone in her room at the time of incident as all other students were attending classes.
He said Rolly and Arvind were Gautams children from his first wife who had died. Gautam had remarried and was currently living in Lakhimpur with his second wife and a daughter,he said.
