Having given more than 30 per cent of the tickets to outsiders,the Congress has realised in a mid-election review that as many as 79 of its rebel workers are contesting either as Independent or as nominees of other parties. As many as 12 of the rebels were accommodated by the Trinamool Congress,the Congresss partner at the Centre and in West Bengal.
Even Trinamool Congresss state in-charge Ram Nihore Rakesh is a former Congressmen having been co-opted as member of the state Congress executive before he left the party. Nihore is a Congress MP from Chail and also contested the Lok Sabha election for the party in 2009 from Kaushambi.
In Meerut,UPCC traders cell convenor Kamal Kapoor is contesting as TMC candidate. In Aligarh,Ramphool Upadhyay,a member of the Seva Dal state committee,has been given ticket by TMC for Kol assembly seat,while UPCC member Anil Jindal is contesting as Trinamool Congress candidate for Aligarh seat.
V M Singh,a farmer leader,has been fielded by the TMC from Bharkhera. Singh was first given ticket by the Congress,but he turned it down and crossed over to the TMC. State Mahila Congress general secretary Suraiya Siddique,once an aide of state Congress president Rita Bahuguna Joshi,is contesting against Joshi in Lucknow cantonment as TMC candidate.
In Bahraich,district Mahila Congress president Beena Raj Mishra is TMC candidate for Payagpur. In Mohanlalganj,co-opted PCC member Baldeo Chaudhary was given ticket by the TMC.
The district where the maximum of eight rebel Congressmen have chosen to contest against their own partymen is Kanpur. They include Shiv Karan Kori,secretary of Kanpur district Congress,who is a Bharatiya Kisan Union candidate,and Ashutosh Pandey,vice-president of the Youth Congress,who is contesting as an Independent from Bhognipur.
Five of the rebel Congressmen are contesting as Janata Dal (United) candidates,they include former MP and AICC member K C Pandey from Khalilabad.
Resentment among the cadres over the selection of candidates is nothing new,but this is the first time we have so many rebels. Many people were angry over the selection of outsiders in the name of winnability, said a senior party leader.
While hardly any of these candidates is in a position to win,they will nonetheless damage the prospects of Congress candidates.
