3 held in UP over Naib Tehsildar’s ‘second marriage after conversion’

The case was registered against the accused under Section 494 (marrying again during the lifetime of husband or wife) of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the UP Prohibition of the Unlawful Conversion of Religion. A day after a case was registered against a 32-year-old naib tehsildar for allegedly marrying for the second time after adopting Islam, the police in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district on Friday arrested three persons, including a cleric, in connection with the case.
The naib tehsildar, Ashish Gupta who hails from Kanpur, is posted in Hamirpur’s Maudaha area.
On Friday, Ashish’s wife Arti Gupta lodged an FIR against his purported second wife (25), her 64-year-old father, her 45-year-old uncle, a 60-year-old cleric, and four others, alleging that the woman and her relatives “forced her husband to change his religion” for the second marriage.
“We have arrested three persons, including the woman’s father, uncle, and the cleric. An investigation in the matter is on,” said Hamirpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Deeksha Sharma.
Arti Gupta said that Ashish was ‘forced to change his religion’ at a mosque on December 24 after which he married the woman in the presence of her father, uncle, and five others.
