28 yrs after man was ‘murdered’,wife files FIR

The Rampur police have started investigations into an alleged murder that took place 28 years ago in Jamunapur village under Khajuria police station.

The Rampur police have started investigations into an alleged murder that took place 28 years ago in Jamunapur village under Khajuria police station. Even as a case in the regard was registered last week at the Khajuria police station on the directions of a local court, the probe faces major hurdles — the person who has reportedly filed the complaint is untraceable, while the few witnesses named in the FIR cannot recall the nearly three-decade-old episode.

In the FIR lodged nearly a week ago,Manjeet Kaur reportedly accused her neighbour,Manjeev Singh,of killing her husband,Satpal Singh, over a land dispute. Manjeev shot Satpal dead on February 10,1982,said Manjeet in the FIR,adding that the accused had disposed of the body in the thickets in the village.

Two persons, Karamveer Singh and Gurvinder Singh, witnessed the incident,Manjeet claimed in the FIR.

Manjeet, who is now settled in Pilibhit, was then staying at

Jamunapur village and Manjeev was her neighbour. Manjeet also stated in the FIR that she had approached the court when the police did not entertain her complaint.

Interestingly, the investigation team went to Pilibhit to meet Manjeet, but could not find her. Also, her relatives claim she has not filed any FIR.

“I came to know about the case when the police team visited our place. I told them that we had not registered any case,” said Sadhu Singh,Manjeet’s relative and village sarpanch.

Sadhu claimed to have learnt that one of Manjeet’s relatives, who shared an old dispute with Manjeev, had tricked her into putting her signature on some papers.

The investigating team, meanwhile, has a daunting task at hand considering the two witnesses in the case are aged, hard on hearing and do not remember much about the incident. Nevertheless, the team has recorded the statement of Karamveer Singh, now 95 years old, although he has failed to provide any significant insight.

Another problem faced by the police is that residents of Jamunapur village say they do not know Manjeet as she had shifted to Pilibhit around two decades ago. Most of the youngsters say they were too young when the incident took place, while the village elders do not remember the case.

Moreover, the thickets in which the accused had reportedly disposed of the body is now land used for cultivation.

Investigating Officer Ram Singh said he met Manjeev Singh,“but he claimed Satpal Singh died in an accident”.

Manjeev reportedly told police that he,along with Satpal and other locals, had gone hunting inside the forests. While returning,Satpal met with an accident. He was brought to the village where he died during treatment.

Rampur Senior Superintendent of Police Ramit Sharma, however, maintained: “Investigations are on.”
