IN A bid to attract youngsters between 18 and 20 years of age who will be first-time voters in the 2017 Assembly elections, BJP’s Kashi region unit has decided to launch a campaign — “I am 18 years old” — beginning next month. As part of the campaign, the unit will hold a series of programmes at universities and colleges in Kashi to tap into the young voters’ base.
“We will organise competitions whereby youths will be asked to showcase through e-posters and e-videos the bad governance and the existing lawlessness in the state. Party’s regional general secretary (organisation) Chandrashekhar ji will select the best posters and the videos and the winners will be felicitated. To give away the prizes to the winners, Union ministers will be invited,” said Piyush Vardhan Singh, BJP’s IT cell co-convener for Kashi region who will coordinate with others in the campaign, adding the party will keep organising such competitions from March onwards.

At the programmes it will hold at the universities, the BJP will publicise the policies of Narendra Modi government and the party’s vision of BJP towards nationalism and the growth of youths, Singh said. BHU and Allahabad Universities are two of the central universities that fall in Kashi region.
Meetings for the preparation of the campaign will begin in various districts of the region after February 22, the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a gathering of Dalits in Varanasi on the occasion of Sant Ravidas Jayanti.
The BJP has already appointed an in-charge for the campaign in all 14 districts of the region and will hold a training workshop for them in Varanasi on February 25. At least two workers from each Assembly segment in these 14 districts will participate in the workshop, Singh said.
“A comparison of achievements of Modi government with the UPA rule and comparison of works of BJP-ruled states with the Samajwadi Party government of UP will be screened before youths who will be invited to attend the IT meets,” Singh said.
Sources said as per the BJP’s “assessment”, there will be nearly 75 lakh new voters in the 2017 elections and a large number of them will be from Kashi region.
