2 clerics in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur booked over social media posts supporting Palestine; 1 held
The police identified the arrested cleric as 23-year-old Atif Chowdhary and said that they were on the lookout for cleric Suhail Ansari.

The Hamirpur police in Uttar Pradesh arrested a 23-year-old cleric on Friday for allegedly promoting enmity between two groups with his statement supporting Palestine on social media. Another cleric was booked in the same case but is absconding, the police said.
The police identified the arrested cleric as Atif Chowdhary and said that he, along with cleric Suhail Ansari, was booked under sections 153-A (promoting enmity between two groups) and 505 (2) (statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes) of the Indian Penal Code. Chowdhary will be produced before a local court on Saturday.
The case was lodged at Maudaha police station in Hamirpur on Friday. “We have arrested Chowdhary and raids are on to trace the other accused,” a senior police officer said.
According to the police, on Saturday they were informed that Chowdhary had written that he stood with Palestine on his profile photo on social media. In another post, he called for people to assemble at a mosque. “The accused also made some comments on social media which are banned and could lead to law and order issues,” the officer said.
Hamirpur Superintendent of Police Deeksha Sharma said that security arrangements have been made to ensure peace in the area and raids were being conducted to trace Ansari, who is on the run.
