A second-year student of N S Polytechnic College at Abhirampur in Burdwan district died on Sunday, four days after reportedly falling from the roof of a bus.
Police said Sandip Mukherjee (21), a resident of Kotolpur in Bankura district, was going home on July 28 in an overcrowded bus when he slipped and fell on the road at Jamtara stop. Sandip, who was admitted to the Vivekananda Nursing Home, succumbed to his injuries at 5.30 am on Sunday. “He had some head injuries including head injuries and was bleeding from his nose and ears when he was brought here,” an official of the nursing home said.
Meanwhile, Sandip’s family members refused to accept the police’s version of the “accident” and suspected foul play. “On July 28, a college staff had called me from his mobile and said my son had met with an accident and was hospitalised. He asked me to come over immediately along with some money required for his treatment. When I arrived, I found that teachers and students had pooled in about Rs 49,000 and handed over the amount to me to pay to the hospital. We have also seen several cut marks on his body which raises our suspicion that something is amiss,” said Balaram Mukherjee, Sandip’s father.
However, the polytechnic institute authorities maintained that Sandip’s death was accidental. “From what I have heard, he was near the gate of an overcrowded bus and was on his phone when the accident happened.
He was initially taken to Bidhannagar Hospital in Durgapur but later shifted to Vivekananda Hospital when his condition deteriorated,” Malay Pit, president, N S Polytechnic College, told The Indian Express.
Asked about the questions raised by Sandip’s father, Pit said, “He has lost his son and has every right to ask the questions, but it is also true that students and teachers had not only taken care of Sandip from the time of his accident till his father arrived, but also contributed about Rs 50,000 towards his medical expenses.”
