The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested an absconding accused on Tuesday in a rape case allegedly related to the post-poll violence after the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election.
The CBI claimed that after concerted efforts on the basis of technical inputs, the accused was arrested from near a mosque at Ilaychipur, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.
The CBI had registered the case on August 30, 2021, in which it was alleged that the rape took place in the victim’s house on May 4, 2021.

A chargesheet was filed against the accused — identified as Usman Ali — on May 5, 2022, before the Court of Ld Special Judge SC/ST(POA) Act, Tamluk, Purba Medinipur.
Ali had been granted bail on September 25, 2024 by the Calcutta High Court, following which the CBI challenged the order in the Supreme Court.
In a statement, the CBI said that neither the accused nor his advocate appeared before the apex court. On August 2 this year, a non-bailable arrest warrant was issued against Ali and the agency was directed to produce him before the court on August 13.
