West Bengal: Burdwan couple ‘attacked’ by driver, wife succumbs to injuries

A 58-year-old woman was killed, while her husband injured, following an alleged attack by their driver at their home in Burdwan on Monday evening. The driver allegedly attacked the couple as they had refused him an advance payment of a month’s salary.

Accused Tapan Das, who had been working for the couple for more than a decade, was arrested after a prolonged interrogation on Tuesday.

According to police, the deceased has been identified as Mousumi Nag, a resident of Tula Lane in Burdwan.

Her husband Dr Subrata Nag (62), an anaesthetist by profession, is undergoing treatment at Burdwan Medical College and Hospital.

“Das, the couple’s driver, has been arrested. Prima facie, the driver wanted a month’s salary in advance, which was refused by the Nag couple, following which he attacked them with a bamboo stick. Both got severely injured, but the wife was declared dead at the hospital,” said a police officer.

According to police, Tapan wanted to visit his sister on Bhaiphonta and hence demanded money from the Nag couple. However, the couple allegedly told him they would give his salary on November 1 only.

He allegedly kept on pressurising the couple, after what which Mousumi asked him to quit the job. The argument turned violent after Das found a bamboo stick in the house and allegedly started beating them up. Their domestic help raised an alarm, following which the neighbours came to their house.

“By then, he had fled away from the spot,” said the officer.

As per sources, he was once fired from the job following an argument with the couple a few years back. However, after he apologised, they hired him back.

As per police, he was into gambling and would often loose money and then used to demand money from the couple making excuses.

“An investigation is on. The actual cause of death and the motive behind the attack is yet to be ascertained,” added the officer.
