A local TMC leader was shot dead by unidentified assailants in a crowded market in Hanskhali area of Nadia district’s Ranghat sub-division on Friday, police said.

The deceased was identified as Amod Ali Biswas, the TMC vice-president of Ramnagar Bara Chuparia panchayat area. The incident took place outside a tea shop at Ramnagar village where the assailants with their faces covered started firing at Biswas, leading to tension in the area. They chased Biswas briefly before killing him on the spot, officials said. Police said they are investigating into the incident. Biswas had gone to the local market in the morning and was sitting at the tea shop.

His body has been sent to a hospital in Krishnanagar for post-mortem, officials said.

TMC Rajya Sabha MP Shantanu Sen said, “Those behind the incident will not be spared. The police will nab the culprits. As the panchayat elections are nearing in the state, the Opposition is getting nervous and wants to create an atmosphere of unrest. The BJP leaders are roaming around the state inciting people to stir up trouble. An attempt is being made to disturb peace in Bengal by bringing hired killers from outside.”

TMC district president Debasish Ganguly, however, said the incident was likely to a fallout of personal enmity. “I don’t believe that he was killed due to political rivalry. He was likely killed over personal enmity. The police are investigating the matter and the truth will come out soon,” he added.

BJP leader Rahul Sinha said, “The Trinamool stands divided. As the panchayat polls are nearing, they are fighting with each other over control in their areas. It has reached an alarming level. There is no such thing as police administration in the state. The condition of the common man in Bengal is miserable.”
