The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) on Thursday took out a rally and staged a dharna in Kolkata against the West Bengal government over the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP).
Scores of students carrying banners joined the rally that was taken out from Golpark to Jadavpur University.
They staged a sit-in at Jadavpur. Addressing the gathering, SFI state president Pratikur Rahaman said, “We are organising protests against the state government’s efforts to implement the NEP. We met Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor and West Bengal Education Board Advisory Committee chairperson Suranjan Das and apprised him of our demands.
He assured us to convey our demands to the government. In the coming days, we are going to intensify our protests over the issue.”
“The number of the school dropouts in the state is on the rise. The TMC government doesn’t want children from poor families to study. This is the reason why it wants to implement the NEP policy,” he added.
SFI state secretary Srijan Bhattacharya said their protest was against the rich and those stealing jobs.
“This policy is the doing of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. It will force schools to shut down, encourage job thieves, strengthen corruption in the teacher selection process and increase college fees.”
