Nearly 20 days after being attacked by a mob during his visit to flood-affected regions in the Jalpaiguri district, BJP MP Khagen Murmu will be flown to AIIMS, Delhi for further treatment, family sources said.

He was discharged from a private hospital in SIliguri on Saturday evening and travelled by road to his Malda home. Doctors have advised him rest.

Murmu’s wife Manju Kisku told mediapersons, “Doctors have asked him not to speak for the next two months. His jaw is badly affected, four of his teeth are still loose, and his vision is still blurred. He is in tremendous pain.”

Murmu, the Lok Sabha MP from Malda Uttar, and Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh were chased and assaulted by a mob of around 500 people at Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri on October 6. Murmu sustained serious injuries and was hospitalised along with Ghosh. Ghosh was discharged last week.

Following the attack, party sources said that Murmu’s security has been upgraded to ‘Y-plus’ status.

‘Y-plus’ security detail includes around 11 personnel, such as two personal security officers (PSOs) and a team of eight to ten commandos and police officers.

Meanwhile, the Jalpaiguri police have arrested five persons for their alleged roles in the assault.
