Stressing that there was the need in West Bengal to follow the model adopted by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Leader of Opposition in Assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday said that rapists should be eliminated through police “encounters” amid rising cases of crimes against women in the state.

Hitting back at Adhikari over his remarks, the Trinamool Congress said an FIR should be filed against him for openly advocating the “encounter” system.

Speaking to mediapersons outside the Assembly soon after the BJP MLAs staged a walkout from the House during the extended monsoon session, Adhikari said, “Three women were raped in just two days. A young schoolgirl was brutalised and murdered in Matigara recently. Earlier, similar incidents happened in Kaliaganj and Hanskhali. In all places, young girls have been violated or killed. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who also holds the law and order portfolio, has squarely failed to stop atrocities on women,” he said.

There is no rule of law in Bengal, he said, adding fear is gone from the minds of criminals who are roaming around fearlessly. He added, “This state needs a strict administrator like Yogi Adityanath. Those who commit such crimes have no right to live. They should be killed in encounters, if necessary.”

He also expressed concern that Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) workers protesting against the recent rape and murder of a schoolgirl were lathicharged and arrested by police while the perpetrators were yet to be booked.

Also, BJP’s Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh claimed that several rapes and murders took place in north Bengal. “ The police resorted to lathi-charge when a protest march was taken out in Siliguri,” he added.

TMC spokesperson Joy Prakash Majumdar said that an FIR should be lodged against the BJP leader for openly advocating “encounters”.

Stating that Adhikari has taken oath under the Constitution and cannot advocate such violent methods, Majumdar said, “Even in the Nirbhaya case, the due process of law was followed and it was left to the judicial system.”

“Adhikari, being a people’s representative and having taken oath under the Constitution, cannot go beyond the law of the land. He has become the proponent for encounters and bulldozer politics which will instill fear and anarchy in society against democratic traditions,” he said.

TMC legislative party’s deputy leader Tapas Roy said, “No matter how much Suvendu and his associates want to make Bengal a Yogi state, whatever happens here will be based on the law.” He asked, “What is meant by encounter?” Does “nyay sanhita” (Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita) include it?”

Earlier, when Deputy Speaker Ashish Banerjee allowed other MLAs to speak before the BJP legislators finished their speeech, the Opposition party members demanding resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee started raising slogans to clarify the government’s position on the issue.

Then the party MLAs started protesting outside the House.
