The complaint was filed against the officer investigating the theft case. Post-mortem examination of the body was conducted on Saturday, it is learnt. (Representational/File) A man arrested in a theft case died in police custody in Narendrapur of South 24 Parganas district on Friday.
The family of the victim, Surjit, alias Saheb Sardar, a resident of Gadhiyar, has submitted a complaint against the Narendrapur police station officials alleging he was beaten to death in custody.
The complaint was filed against the officer investigating the theft case. Post-mortem examination of the body was conducted on Saturday, it is learnt.
Surjit’s family claimed that was taken away by the police from in front of their house on April 13 afternoon.
The police, however, claimed that Surjit was arrested in the theft case on April 14. Surjit, an alleged drug addict, was arrested earlier on charges of theft and extortion too.
The victim’s family said that he was admitted to a de-addiction center twice nearly a an year ago. After he fell ill in the lock-up on Thursday (April 20), he was admitted to a Sonarpur hospital and later taken to MR Bangur Hospital. His elder brother Subrata Sardar alleged that police had demanded money from him in lieu of releasing Surjit. Sources said Surjit last met his family members on April 14.
Baruipur Superintendent of Police (SP) Pushpa said, “Allegations are being probed. An internal inquiry is also underway.”
