Rain continues in districts; Sunderbans, Basirhat worst affected

In some districts, roads continued to be under water and train services were irregular. The aftermath of cyclone Komen — which had made landfall in Bangladesh — however, was not as virulent as it was thought to be. Still, several districts were experiencing rains because of its impact.

So far, the coastal belt of Sunderbans — covering both North and South-24 Parganas and areas under Basirhat sub-division, where rising rivers and breached embankments have inundated many areas — are the worst affected in the state. Hundreds of marooned people have been shifted to safer areas.

Many areas in Gosaba, Canning, Diamond Harbour are under several feet of water. In Hooghly district, Arambagh, Goghat, Ghatal have been badly affected due to the release of water from dams.

State government officials said that relief worth over Rs 100 crore have already been sent to the districts.
