(Express File Photo) Five days after a first-year student died after falling off the balcony of his hostel room on the campus, Jadavpur University Registrar Snehamanju Bose Monday said that neither the issue of alleged ragging was brought to their notice nor they received any written complaint from the victim levelling such allegations.
Bose, who visited the hostel where the incident took place, said the absence of a regular vice-chancellor at the university was to be blamed for their inability to take crucial administrative decisions for better functioning of the institution.
Terming the student’s death as an “extremely unfortunate” incident, Bose said, “I was on leave for the last few days. The universities function under some norms. The chancellor, vice-chancellor, registrar and the dean of students play a vital role. If there is no V-C, then it is a problem.”
“Had we received a written complaint (of ragging), our anti-ragging committee would have taken prompt action. These (first-year) students attended classes for only two or three days. Mentoring and other formalities had just started,” she added.
As to how former students are still staying in hostels, the Registrar said, “We did not have information about it. We have to be more alert and ensure that those involved in such incidents are punished and make the varsity ragging-free.”
The first-year Bengali student succumbed to his injuries on July 10 after falling from the balcony of his hostel room last night. Later, the police registered a murder case on the basis of a complaint filed by the victim’s father. The police have arrested three persons in connection with the student’s death.
