QR codes to check illegal hoardings on Kolkata skyline

KMC officials said through the QR code system authorities will be able to check all details about hoardings including the name of the applicant, work order, permission number, area, the validity of the permission and the agency which installed the hoarding. (Representational Image)

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will introduce a QR code-based system to crack down on illegal hoardings, banners and posters in Kolkata. According to the civic agency, the QR codes will be embossed on hoardings and banners and will help determine whether a hoarding is authorised or not.

“We will soon introduce QR codes for hoardings used for advertisements. We will not allow any hoarding in the city without our approval. We are coming up with a policy to curb illegal advertisements and visual pollution. Be it a private or government entity, all of them will have to put up the hoardings in adherence to the policy,” said Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim.

Officials said that though it is mandatory to take KMC’s approval before installing an advertisement hoarding in the city, but due to complex legal rules several companies have put up hoardings illegally. The unauthorised hoardings deprive KMC of its revenue share, they added.
