The first day of the two-day event was attended by SP president Akhilesh Yadav, his uncle Shivpal Yadav, party MP Jaya Bachchan, former West Bengal minister and senior party leader Kiranmay Nanda and other
party leaders.
Leaders said the party set a target of winning at least 50 of the total 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh in the 2024 elections and ensure that the BJP is defeated in the northern state.
“Today, we discussed organisational issues. In 2024, we hope to win at least 50 seats from Uttar Pradesh,” senior SP leader Shivpal Singh Yadav told mediapersons.
Later while talking to PTI, SP president Akhilesh Yadav said the party would go all out to defeat the BJP in Uttar Pradesh.
“Uttar Pradesh is the only state which can stop the BJP as it has the largest number of seats. The entire country is looking up to the Samajwadi Party. We will defeat the BJP in Uttar Pradesh. The BJP has told a lot of lies, be it prices of diesel, petrol or LPG or price rise,” he said.
According to reports, Akhilesh will address a press conference on Sunday. “There will be a press conference on Sunday after which Akhilesh Yadav will visit the Mayapur ISKCON Temple in Krishnanagar area,” said the SP leader.
On Friday, Akhilesh Yadav met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at her Kalighat residence. Sources said the two party chiefs discussed the 2024 elections. “The SP chief assured Mamata Banerjee that his party would support the TMC in fighting the BJP,” said a source. Addressing party workers on Friday, Akhilesh said: “If we can defeat the BJP in Bengal, we will defeat them in Uttar Pradesh too. Our focus is to remove the BJP from Uttar Pradesh and the rest of the country.”
Pointing out that the TMC had won in Bengal defeating the BJP, he said: “Didi (Mamata) is fighting in Bengal, we are fighting in UP… Our party is with Didi. How can we be with the Congress?… We are equidistant from both the BJP and Congress.”
Akhilesh also slammed the BJP for “misusing” Central agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and CBI, against Opposition leaders.
