Continuing with its plan to beautify major heritage spots,the state tourism department has taken up a Rs 5-crore project to install musical LED lights at four such places in the city.
Those identified spots include Victoria Memorial Hall,Nakhoda Maszid,St Pauls Church,and Town Hall.
A collaborative initiative of state tourism department and Kolkata Municipal Corporation,the beautification drive will see Victoria Hall getting Rs 3 crore to help install musical LED lights,while Rs 50 lakh,Rs 45 lakh and Rs 35 lakh have been set apart for the other three,respectively. The department has also set aside Rs 1.13 crore for the development of Nimtala Ghat.
When contacted,state tourism minister Krishnendu Narayan Choudhury said the beautification project was started months ago.
First we identified some important heritage spots where we can introduce light and sound shows depicting historical events to attract tourists. Musical lights will be installed in all these places. Plans are on to take this drive to some historic places in Malda,too.
Significantly,the tourism department and the KMC had earlier spent around Rs 7 crore in beautifying the Dalhousie Square area,which is often termed the citys Central Business District.
The Lal Dighi lake in front of the Writers Building in Dalhousie square was cleaned with boating facilities brought in for the tourists.
