Maoist,Didi party lists of armed CPM camps are almost identical

On September 1,West Bengal Maoist leader Kishenji sent a list of 86 Harmad camps of armed CPM supporters to social activist Swami Agnivesh. He wanted Agnivesh to bring this list to the notice of the Union Home Ministry.

Three days later,Mamata Banerjee’s party Trinamool Congress handed a list of Harmad camps to the state DGP and Home Secretary, marking a copy to the Union Home Ministry.

The two lists are almost identical — the Trinamool only added names of seven more camps to its list.

At least one official in the state Home Department couldn’t help observe: “The Trinamool Congress seems to have banked heavily on Kishenji’s data bank and network to compile the list.”

The ruling CPM,Banerjee’s bitter rival, has always maintained that her party has a line open with the Maoists.

In the last fortnight, the Maoists and Trinamool Congress have gone to town over the presence of Harmad camps in Jungle Mahal. In his letter to Agnivesh — dated August 28,it was sent on September 1 — Kishenji claimed that these camps with “sophisticated firearms” have mushroomed in recent months on school premises,in panchayat offices, inside fortified CPM offices, even in houses of CPM leaders.

On the directions of Banerjee,Trinamool general secretary and state Leader of Opposition Partho Chatterjee, accompanied by Union Minister of State for Shipping Mukul Roy and MLA Subrata Bakshi, handed over a list of 93 Harmad camps to the state government on September 4.

The similarity in the two lists, accessed by The Sunday Express,is not just restricted to the names but also in the arrangement of the two lists, down to affected blocks, districts, even serial numbers. In both lists, all Maoist-hit blocks have the same number of armed CPM camps. The description, location of the camps are identical:

* In both lists, there are 31 Harmad camps in Goaltore block.

* In Kishenji’s list,Sitanathpur camp in Salboni block in West Midnapore has been mentioned at serial number 36. Location of the camp mentions High School (House of MLA Khagen Mahato).

* In the Trinamool list,Sitanathpur camp in Salboni block is also mentioned at serial number 36. Location: High School (House of MLA Khagen Mahato).

Asked about the two lists being nearly identical,Partho Chatterjee said: “We did not have the list that was prepared by Kishenji. So we don’t know if the two lists are identical. We worked on our own to collect information about the camps.”

“Our list was published in our mouthpiece Jaago Bangla on September 2. It is widely circulated in the Jungle Mahal area. It is possible that the Maoists prepared their report based on our data.”

Told that Kishenji’s list was released earlier,Chatterjee said: “Kishenji might have back-dated the letter to August 28. May be they prepared the list after we published it in our mouthpiece.”Maoist ideologue Varavara Rao said: “This is a local issue,I should not comment on the matter. But I do know that the CPI (Maoist) has full knowledge of the whereabouts of armed CPM camps.”
