The couple used to fight often and the quarrels became more frequent after their third daughter was born.
A 30-year-old man has been arrested for killing his wife and three children in Murshidabad district on Sunday, the police said. The bodies of Nafisa Bibi and her three children — Ameena (5), Masida (3) and Tuhina (10 months old) — were found early Sunday morning in a completely charred state.
According to the police, the four were killed before their bodies were set on fire.
Ustab Ali, a resident of Bhawanipur village and Nafisa’s husband, has been arrested on charges of murder. Police said Ali was reportedly angry with his wife “for not giving birth to a son”. Family members of Nafisa said Ali was also keeping an affair with another woman and wanted to divorce his wife.

“The couple used to fight often and the quarrels became more frequent after their third daughter was born,” a police officer quoted one of the family members, adding that on several occasions, Ali would leave his wife and the three kids at her mother’s place but each time she would return home.
“Based on the family’s complaint, we have arrested Ali but we are yet to ascertain the motive. We are interrogating him to get more information,” said Murshidabad Superintendent of Police, C Sudhakar. Police added that Ali didn’t have a permanent job and had also gone to Saudi Arabia for a stint as a labourer.
