CPM state secretary and leader of Opposition Surya Kanta Mishra exhorted party cadres to turn the proposed December 27 rally into a “success”, preparations for which began Sunday with the party holding several rallies simultaneously in different parts of the city.
Mishra, who led one of the rallies from Chiria More to Park Circus, said CPM’s motive is “to remove BJP from the Centre and TMC from Bengal”.
“The need of the hour is ‘TMC hatao Bangla bachao, BJP hatao desh bachao’ (Eradicate TMC, save Bengal; remove BJP, save the country). Democracy and secularism have been attacked in the reign of these two parties. The Brigade rally (on December 27) needs to be a roaring success in preparation for the forthcoming battle,” he told the gathering.
Most of the CPM rallies of late have resulted in clashes between its workers and members of the ruling Trinamool Congress.
A month ago, Mishra was allegedly manhandled by Trinamool cadres at Narayangary in West Midnapore district. CPM has claimed the ruling party’s supporters “repeatedly attacked” its rallies but maintained that the alleged attacks have “failed to dampen the spirit of our workers who carried out the marches with renewed vigour”.
CPM politburo member Biman Bose who was leading another rally from Garia crossing to Park Circus, said the state had not only failed to bring in the development it had promised but also in the past four-and-a-half years, “personal interest received prominence over general welfare”.
“The ruling party has no respect for the Opposition and is trying to curb every voice of criticism. It shows they are afraid of the inevitable,” Bose said.
Senior CPM leader Rabin Deb criticised the Trinamool for its alleged involvement in the multi-crore Saradha ponzi scam, attacking Left supporters
and implicating them in false cases.
“We will have our party plenum from December 27 to 31. There will be street corner meetings, rallies and we will create awareness among people at over 77,000 booths across the state,” Deb said.
Two more rallies, starting from Silpara in Behala and Kidderpore ended at Taratala while the final rally travelled from Garden Reach to Fatehpur Bazar.
