A day after reports of anonymous letters threatening arson being issued to St Capitaneo Higher Secondary School for Girls at Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri district surfaced, the police achieved no breakthrough in the case even as some local people assembled outside the school gate on Wednesday and extended their support to the school authorities. Superintendent of Police, Jalpaiguri Avarru Rabindranth said the police were looking at all aspects of the case, while police pickets continued to be provided to the school. A day after the rape of a 71-year-old nun and robbery at a convent school in Ranaghat, several hand-written anonymous letters were found in the Nagrakata school compound, particularly in the residential blocks of the Sisters. The letters threatened the authorities to shut down the school and asked the Sisters to leave the campus. [related-post] The Parish priest Father Mathius Kareketta visited the school on Wednesday along with some representatives of the Christian community groups, and talked to the school authorities. He told reporters that normal classes were being held in the school even though there was an undercurrent of tension. Police sources said the five letters received in the school’s residential area were examined by experts and prima facie it appeared that the hand-writing was similar across all the letters. The authorities had reportedly found a similar letter in the washroom of a hostel. Meanwhile, some local residents said there might be some internal problems between the convent and the Sisters running the institution. Many of them chanted slogans in front of the school in support of the school authorities and said they will not allow any harm to come to it. Gautam Sarkar, Vishwa Hindu Parishad coordinator of North Bengal districts said though the activities of the church and other missionary bodies have increased sharply in many North Bengal districts, the VHP has not interfered with their work till now. Herod Mullick, working president of the Bangiya Christiya Pariseba, said this incident should not be undermined as a prank, and demanded quick arrest of the culprits in this case as well as the Ranaghat rape incident.
