Various Left organisations on Monday carried a march in support of women wrestlers protesting in the national capital against alleged harassment by BJP MP and Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Hundreds of activists joined the procession on the call of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist), or SUCI(C), and other left organisations like the All India Democratic Youth Organisation (AIDYO) and All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO) from Raja Subodh Mullick Square to Esplanade.

Slogans were raised against the BJP-led Central government, particularly Singh and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Runa Purkait, a Left leader, said, “It is shameful that women wrestlers who brought laurels to the country at international events like the Olympics have to come out on streets and protest against a conman for over a month. Their voices are not being heard.”

AIDSO president Pintu Das said, “We are standing against the sexual harassment of women wrestlers. The government is taking the side of Singh who has been accused of sexual assault. While the ruling party is known to have given slogans like ‘Beti Bachao Peti Padhao’, we are witnessing how innocent women are dragged and treated by the police.”

AIDYO chief Anjan Mukherjee accused the BJP of “sponsoring” Brij Bhushan Singh. “In a democratic country like ours, this kind of behaviour is unacceptable. The Supreme Court should take strict action against him,” Mukherjee added.
