Lawyers have criticised the Chief Minister’s objections, reportedly to the inclusion of four lawyers in a recommendation list for appointment of judges, saying that the move amounts to intervention in the selection process.

“If Bhattachajee has objected to their inclusion in the list then he has acted beyond his jurisdiction. We consider it as an intervention by the state government in the selection process of judges,” said Asish Roy,general secretary,Bar Association of the Calcutta High Court.

The chief minister has reportedly written a letter to Union Law Minister Hansraj Bharadwaj objecting to the inclusion of four lawyers — Uttam Mazumdar,Debdutta Sen,Arijit Banerjee and Anit Kumar Raksit — in the list prepared by a panel headed by Calcutta High Court Chief Justice SS Nijjar.

Barrister Bhaskar Sen,general secretary of the Bar Library Club, said: “It is an unfortunate incident. The objections raised by him are baseless.”

He added that Debdutta Sen and Arijit Banerjee, both members of the Bar Libary Club, have been practising in the High Court for more than 15 years and the incident may malign their reputation.

Sources in the High Court said the government should have raised objections against these lawyers when the Governor had forwarded the list to the Legal Department. But sources added that the department had given its nod to all the 13 lawyers recommended for appointment as judges.
