Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party for promising voters to increase the amount given to beneficiaries under the Lakshmi Bhandar scheme to Rs 2,000 if its candidates are elected in the July 8 panchayat polls. Banerjee said the party is in power in 12 states but is yet to implement such a scheme anywhere.

Addressing a rally at Narayangarh in Purba Medinipur, the TMC leader said, “Today, there is a competition between Sukanta Majumdar and Suvendu Adhikari over who can remain in the news by mentioning Lakshmi Bhandar. The BJP is in power in 12 states across the nation. There was a time when BJP leaders used to attack the scheme and say the government was giving out alms. Let the BJP launch projects like Lakshmi Bhandar in any of the 12 states they rule.” Under the Lakshmi Bhandar scheme, the West Bengal government provides basic income support to the female heads of the family.

The Diamond Harbour MP blamed BJP MPs of West Bengal of never taking up the state’s issues with the higher-ups at the Centre and accused the Narendra Modi government of stopping all central funds to it. “Dilip Ghosh is the MP from here (Paschim Medinipur). May I ask what he did in these four years? The Modi government has stopped the funds for 100 days’ work and squeezed PM Awas Yojana money. Has Dilip Ghosh, who is the former BJP state president, raised the issue? No BJP MP has ever taken up the cause of the poor,” Banerjee said.

Reacting to Abhishek’s allegations, BJP leader Rahul Sinha said,”He doesn’t know what schemes people get in states where the BJP is in power. If he comes to know about the schemes rolled out for women beneficiaries in these states he will loose his mind.”

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in state Assembly and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari addressed two rallies in Phulia and Chakdah areas of Nadia district. Speaking during the rally in Phulia, Adhikari said, “I-PAC has planned how Trinamool will rig the panchayat polls.” Prashant Kishor’s poll strategy group I-APC has been roped in by the ruling TMC. “I-PAC has asked TMC to stop Opposition agents from entering the polling booths first in the morning, Adhikari said. Cautioning voters, the BJP leader said, “Before placing the ballot box in the strong room, check if the doors and windows are properly sealed. Check if the door is cut somewhere. See if a CCTV camera is installed or not.”
