In view of the persistent Chinese threats in North East,the Indian Air Force (IAF) has decided to go for a composite upgradation of its establishment in the region where violations by the neighbour have been recorded in the past.
In the North East we are going for a composite upgradation. It must have been done long time back but we are happy that we have started it now, said Air Chief Marshal P V Naik,speaking on the last day of the Indo-UK joint air exercise,Indradhansuh III,at Kalaikunda Airbase.
The government has appointed an empowered committee headed by the vice-chief of IAF (P K Barbora) on upgrading the facilities in North East and a lot of things have happened on ground, he said. Naik pointed out that the IAF will up its capacity for eight advance landing grounds and five major air fields in North East.
Officials of IAF said the major airfields of North East like Guwahati,Panagrah,Tejpur,Chabua,Bagdogra and Salwa are being modernised under the project,Modernization of Air Field Infrastructure (MAFI). This would involve better runway facilities,ground maneuvering area,navigation apparatus,radar facilities,ammunition dumps,etc.
Responding to queries,Naik said the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mark I will be inducted into the squadron by mid-2011 at Sulur in south India. For LCA Mark II,the process of selection of engine is nearing completion and it can be inducted by next 2-3 years.
At the end of joint exercise,Naik and Chief of RAF,UK,Sir Stephen Dalton participated in the joint war gaming operation.
