THE West Bengal government and the State Election Commission are locked in another controversy — this time over the control of police during the poll process.

In a notification issued on May 27,the SEC had stated that the police would be under its control.

The state government,in a letter today,has raised this point,wanting to know the provision of law under which the police will be under SEC’s control.

Disclosing this,Tapash Roy,secretary,SEC said the commission has not sent any reply but consulted the matter with legal experts in this regard.

Meanwhile,the SEC today gave details of filing of nomination papers in the last two days in the three-tier panchayat elections in the nine districts. A total of 5,233 candidates have so far filed nomination papers amid sporadic violence in several places in the nine districts. Maximum nominations — 2,136 — were filed by the Left Front candidates. According to the election commission,1,430 candidates of the Trinamool Congress and 387 candidates of Congress have filed the nomination papers.

The commission also received complaints about violence from several places of the districts.
