GTA gets more funds, and its employees more benefits

CM announces to restart Regional School Service Commission defunct since 2003

After her party’s recent win in the GTA and two-tier panchayat system in the hill districts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday announced to give more powers to the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) to facilitate its functioning and allotted another Rs 75 crore for “development of hills”.

Announcing that GTA employees recruited since the time of Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC) in 2011 will be brought under the 2019 pay commission of the state government instead of the present 2009 payroll, the CM said that GTA employees will from now on get death, gratuity and pension benefits.

“Retired employees from the GTA will get gratuity and encashment benefits of Rs 20 lakh,” the chief minister announced at a programme in Kurseong.

She also announced the restart of the Regional School Service Commission for the GTA area. The Commission has been closed since 2003.

Once this commission starts to function, it will be possible for the GTA to appoint 590 teachers in 146 upper primary and high schools in the two hill districts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong.

The chief minister also announced the creation of District School Boards in Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts. The school board will be formed through an ad hoc committee.

Also, a total of 23 clusters and 43 rural haats have been set up in the GTA area, the chief minister said.
